If you’re looking for fresh, local, sustainable goods- look no further than the farmers markets of Nanaimo. It’s no surprise that Nanaimo has multiple farmers markets- it’s an artists haven, and between the sea and the land, there’s plenty that’s caught, grown, or cultivated in the city and its surrounding area. Farmers Markets are one of the few places left where people can meet the people who made the things they buy and see how their purchases directly impact these businesses. Everything is available- produce, fish, crafts, personal care, apparel, and more. These Farmer’s markets operate on different days so you never have to choose which one to visit- go to all of them!
The Nanaimo Downtown Farmers Market is Nanaimo’s original market. It runs every Saturday from May 1 to September 21 of 2021 from 10 AM to 2 PM. The Farmers Market is located on Pioneer Waterfront Plaza on Front Street, with beautiful views of the harbour. They have more than 20 full time vendors and an ever revolving set of additional vendors so there are always new goods coming in every week!
The Island Roots Market Co-op is the only year-round farmers market in Nanaimo, located at Beban Park (inside in the winter, and outside in the summer). This market runs every Wednesday from 2pm to 6pm. The co-op was established to provide a place for locals to sell and display their products year-round in a sustainable way by helping procure a living wage for everyone. This Market Island Co-op plans to use their farmers market space to host more events, workshops, and classes to support the community in addition to the market. They also have an online store!
The Cedar Farmers Market takes place every Sunday from mid May to the end of October at their new location 10 minutes south of Nanaimo at Woodbank School. It’s open from 10 am- 2 pm, though it opens earlier at 9:30 for seniors and immune-compromised individuals. They pride themselves on being a stepping stone for local farmers and businesses, and cultivate a social atmosphere that’s fun to shop in.
If you’re staying in Nanaimo this summer, spend some time at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel. With beautiful rooms and a waterfront location, we are the ideal place to make your home base.
