One of Vancouver Island’s top holiday events is back: Milner Christmas Magic 2021!

Milner Gardens and the Woodland Society are pleased to present this year’s Milner Christmas Magic event at Vancouver Island University.

This holiday event invites guests to stroll through festive light displays featuring over 1,000 twinkling lights. Situated on the Qualicum Beach waterfront, Milner Gardens spans over 70 acres.

Since the event first launched in 2003, it has quickly grown to become the go-to holiday attraction in the region. Although this local favourite was canceled last year due to the pandemic, it is back in full swing for 2021.

There are a few changes to this year’s event due to the pandemic, such as Milner’s house and cottage being closed, but the gift shop is still open and food and refreshments will be available outside.

Santa’s sleigh will also be set up for picture-taking, and if your young one wants to mail their letter to Santa Claus, they can do so at the on-site mailbox.

Milner Christmas Magic 2021 is open from December 3rd to 5th, 10th to 12th, and 17th to 19th, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with showings until 8:30 pm.

Advance tickets are not required and all tickets are by donation. The suggested donations are as follows: Adult $5, Child $2.50, or Family (2 adults & up to 3 children under 19 yrs) $12. All donations from the Milner Christmas Magic event are in support of Milner Gardens and Woodland Society.

On-site parking is limited, but there is parking available along the shoulder of the Island Highway.

COVID-19 safety protocols are in effect, however, proof of vaccination is not required for entry given that the event is primarily outdoors. Masks are mandatory in the Gingerbread Cottage Gift Shop.

Grab your family and enjoy this magical holiday event while you still can!

If you’re going to be in Nanaimo this December, then we recommend heading over to nearby Qualicum Beach for Milner Magic Christmas 2021. And if you need a place to stay during your visit, you’re always welcome at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel. Roughly one hour from Nanaimo in nearby Malahat, BC lies Vancouver Island’s newest and trendiest tourist attraction, the Malahat SkyWalk.

Newly opened in 2021, this spectacular, family-friendly tourist attraction is all about views.

Marketed as “the ultimate natural high,” the SkyWalk is a 600-metre tree walk that takes you to a stunning, 360-degree lookout point.

Wander through the scenic arbutus forest, before being guided up a 32-metre spiral ramp. At the top of the ramp, you’ll find the lookout point, which is 250 metres above sea level.

You can probably guess that the views from the top are nothing short of stunning. Visitors can marvel at Finlayson Arm, Saanich Peninsula, and Mount Baker. You can even spot the distant Coast Mountains on a clear day.

Beyond the lookout point, Malahat SkyWalk guests are sure to love the 165 foot long and 65 foot tall slide that runs from the top to the bottom. Guests over the age of 5 are invited to slide down to the ground floor rather than walk, should they wish to do so.

Wondering how long to spend at this Vancouver Island tourist attraction? The official website recommends allotting at least 90 minutes. This includes the 2.2 kilometre walk to the top, time to take photos and maybe enjoy a picnic from the lookout point, and return to the bottom. Plus, there are shops, a café, and a hiking trail on-site.

The Malahat SkyWalk is currently open every day from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm, with the last admission at 5:00 pm. However, it’s recommended that you check the website in advance of your visit to ensure the hours haven’t changed, as they do change seasonally.

Tickets are available for purchase online (which allows you to skip the line when you arrive) and cost $31.95 for adults, $28.95 for seniors, and $18.95 for children (kids under 5 go free). Annual passes and family tickets are also available.

If you’re visiting Nanaimo this fall, then be sure to take a half day trip to Malahat and explore this new tourist attraction. And if you need a place to stay while in town, you’re always welcome at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel here in Nanaimo.

Nanaimo is located in central Vancouver Island, which makes it an excellent jumping off point to explore nearby regions. From winery hopping in Cowichan Bay to hitting the beach in Parksville, check out the top 3 summer day trips from Nanaimo, BC.

Cowichan Bay

Less than an hour south of Nanaimo lies beautiful Cowichan Bay. This seaside town is bursting with charm and also happens to be filled with fun activities. Whale watching is a popular activity between April and October, where visitors can expect to see everything from humpback whales and Minke whales to sea lions and bald eagles. Cowichan Valley is also home to several of the top wineries in BC, including Cherry Point Estate Wines, Rocky Creek Winery, and Blue Grouse Estate Winery. Explore the 11 wineries and one cidery on your own or book a guided tour.

Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park

One hour north of Nanaimo (just past Qualicum Beach - more on that below) lies Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park. As the name suggests, this provincial park is home to caves and other incredible natural sights. Strap on your helmet and get exploring. Here, you’ll find crystal formations, waterfalls, and ancient fossils. Tours are recommended, especially if you plan to rappel down into the caves themselves.

Qualicum Beach & Parksville

Finally, no trip to Nanaimo is complete without a day spent in Qualicum Beach & Parksville. Just north of Nanaimo, these relaxing oceanside towns offer beautiful scenery, as well as an opportunity for shopping and dining. Stroll along pebbly Qualicum Beach looking for all kinds of treasure, before heading to Parksville for more beach time (this time on sandy beaches). Be sure to stop by Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park when in Parksville. Though it can get crowded in the summer, you should still have plenty of privacy owing to the sheer size of the park.

If you’re looking for fresh, local, sustainable goods- look no further than the farmers markets of Nanaimo. It’s no surprise that Nanaimo has multiple farmers markets- it’s an artists haven, and between the sea and the land, there’s plenty that’s caught, grown, or cultivated in the city and its surrounding area. Farmers Markets are one of the few places left where people can meet the people who made the things they buy and see how their purchases directly impact these businesses. Everything is available- produce, fish, crafts, personal care, apparel, and more. These Farmer’s markets operate on different days so you never have to choose which one to visit- go to all of them!

Nanaimo Downtown Farmers Market

The Nanaimo Downtown Farmers Market is Nanaimo’s original market. It runs every Saturday from May 1 to September 21 of 2021 from 10 AM to 2 PM. The Farmers Market is located on Pioneer Waterfront Plaza on Front Street, with beautiful views of the harbour. They have more than 20 full time vendors and an ever revolving set of additional vendors so there are always new goods coming in every week!

ISLAND ROOTS MARKET CO-OP

The Island Roots Market Co-op is the only year-round farmers market in Nanaimo, located at Beban Park (inside in the winter, and outside in the summer). This market runs every Wednesday from 2pm to 6pm. The co-op was established to provide a place for locals to sell and display their products year-round in a sustainable way by helping procure a living wage for everyone. This Market Island Co-op plans to use their farmers market space to host more events, workshops, and classes to support the community in addition to the market. They also have an online store!

CEDAR FARMERS MARKET

The Cedar Farmers Market takes place every Sunday from mid May to the end of October at their new location 10 minutes south of Nanaimo at Woodbank School. It’s open from 10 am- 2 pm, though it opens earlier at 9:30 for seniors and immune-compromised individuals. They pride themselves on being a stepping stone for local farmers and businesses, and cultivate a social atmosphere that’s fun to shop in.

Travelling for medical reasons is a part of life. Thankfully, hotels across Canada make travelling easier by offering special discounted rates to those in town for health care-related purposes. With the rise of COVID-19, hotels have become an even more integral part of medical travel, with people needing a place to self-isolate. Whether travelling from abroad or working somewhere that experienced an outbreak, the need for a place to quarantine outside of one’s home is growing. This article touches on how to go about booking a room for a medical appointment or to self-isolate in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Medical, Compassionate, and Self-Isolation Rates

For those that don’t know, medical, compassionate, and the more recent phenomenon of self-isolation rates are offered by many hotels across the country. These rates are essentially discounts offered to hotel guests who are travelling for medical reasons, such as an appointment with a specialist or a surgical procedure, who are travelling to say goodbye to a loved one or to attend a funeral, or who require a place to stay in order to quarantine. Finding a hotel that offers such rates has never been easier in Nanaimo thanks to the Government of British Columbia’s online Medical Travel Accommodation Listing tool. With this tool, you can select the BC city you need to visit, such as Nanaimo, and a whole list of available hotels that offer medical rates will pop up. From there, you can contact any hotels of interest and either book a room over the phone or online.

What to Expect Upon Check-In

Upon arrival at the hotel you have booked, you may be required to prevent proof of medical necessity in order to secure the discounted room rate. From there, depending on the purpose of your visit, your experience may differ. Those requiring a place to self-isolate due to recent international travel or possible exposure to COVID-19 will be asked not to use the hotel facilities. In other words, you will be required to stay in your hotel room. In addition, the hotel room will not be serviced until you check out, to ensure the safety and health of hotel staff. That said, any amenities that you would like to enjoy, including food, can be delivered to your hotel room door.

Do you need somewhere to stay for medical or compassionate reasons in Nanaimo? Then why not book a room at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel? We are a luxe Nanaimo hotel that offers plenty of upscale amenities, a convenient location, and a discounted medical/compassionate rate for those in need.

At the south end, you can marvel at boats as you walk past the marina. As you venture further north, you will come to a coffee shop, a gourmet tea shop, several ice cream shops, and other eateries.

Go Hiking

Nanaimo is one of the best places to go hiking on Vancouver Island. The city is home to several leisurely walking and cycling trails, such as the Parkway Trail, Walley Creek Trail, E&N Trail, and the waterfront walkway mentioned above. However, it’s also near some beautiful trails in nature, like those offered in Pipers Lagoon Park, The Morrell Nature Sanctuary, and on Newcastle Island (a Marine Provincial Park).

Eat Your Way Through the Nanaimo Bar Trail

Lastly, no visit to Nanaimo would be complete without eating the city’s most famous food: the Nanaimo bar! If you’re a fan of this chocolatey treat, then why not embark on the Nanaimo Bar Trail? This is a self-guided trail designed by the city that maps out every coffee shop and bakery selling Nanaimo bars in Nanaimo. For a classic Nanaimo bar, stops include Serious Coffee North, Hearthstone Artisan Bakery, and Vault Cafe. For a twist on the original, you can get a deep fried Nanaimo bar at Pirate Chips, a Nanaimo bar cupcake at A Wee Cupcakery, and Nanaimo bar fudge at Cabela’s. Take the tour and decide for yourself which is best!

If you plan on visiting Nanaimo this November, then be sure to book a room at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel. We offer quality accommodation, top-notch amenities, and an unbeatable location.

Nanaimo has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! No, they’re not the blue water and sandy beaches of Hawaii or the Caribbean, but the waters of the Pacific Ocean on the shores of Vancouver Island make for a wild, rugged, natural beauty that is truly one-of-a-kind.

QUALICUM BEACH

Qualicum Beach is maybe the quintessential Vancouver Island beach. Teeming with wildlife like herons, eagles and plenty of fish, a walk across Qualicum is just the thing for kids to develop a lifelong fascination with biology and ecology. The stony beach hides all sorts of delights like tiny crabs, amphibians and so much more. A long paved trail following the path of the beach makes it easy to explore for everyone, including anyone with mobility issues, but if you’re willing or able to scurry among the rocks and stones you’ll find your curiosity amply rewarded!

BUCCANEER BEACH

Another rugged beauty, Buccaneer Beach is a hidden gem in nearby Bowser. Located down a short path that takes you away from civilization and into a small, lush alcove surrounded by trees and bustling with wildlife, this is a perfect place to get away from it all and re-centre on what matters. Bring a thermos of tea and plan on having a truly good sit.

PARKSVILLE COMMUNITY PARK

The heart of Nanaimo. This outdoor space has it all: a fantastic, sandy beach, a playground, an outdoor gym, lots of green grass to spread out a blanket and have a family picnic, and frequent community events. This is the kind of park that brings a community together, even during times of difficulty – if you’re looking for a great way to be out with people while maintaining a safe distance from people, then you owe yourself a trip to Parksville Community Park.

Nanaimo is a great way to get away from it all. A portal to all the rugged beauty of Vancouver Island in a charming small city that feels like a close-knit village, Nanaimo is a great place to visit for a low-stakes vacay. Book a room at the Best Western Dorchester Inn today!

It’s been a long year already, and summer is slipping by so very fast. If you’ve been dragging your heels getting out and celebrating nature this year, you owe it to yourself to come to Nanaimo this August – an easy destination for locals, Nanaimo is located to some of the most stunning natural beauty on Vancouver Island – which puts it in the running for some of the most stunning beauty in the world!

CATHEDRAL GROVE

Cathedral Grove earned its name from the spiritual, almost religious feeling you get by staring upwards through the vast canopy of trees, overwhelmed by green majesty. It’s a spectacular spot, and if you’ve never seen it you owe it to yourself to make the trip.

Located a short drive from Nanaimo in MacMillan Provincial Park, Cathedral Grove is a rare example of a Douglas Fir forest. The trees tower so far into the sky that you can’t even see their tops from the ground, and their bases are so wide that even a massive family couldn’t hold hands around the trunk!

Cathedral grove features a vast array of walking trails, and while it is somewhat busy in the parking lot it doesn’t take much walking before you’re all alone in nature. The park may be temporarily closed at the moment - please check the status online before heading to the park.

COLLIERY DAM PARK

Located in the south of Nanaimo, this park has beautifully groomed walking trails and also a water reservoir that you can swim in! While locals do often use these trails and the swimming hole, it’s never been particularly busy, making this an easy spot for getting away from the crowds and going for a gentle hike and refreshing swim without even leaving the city. If you come to Nanaimo, it’s a relaxed way to get out without making a big deal of it.

MOUNT BENSON

Looking for more of a challenge? Then the trails climbing at Mount Benson are waiting for you! You’ll be among the select few walking up the side of the mountain on any given day. Don’t worry, there are paths – no climbing gear required! But we do recommend you bring a good pair of shoes or boots because it’s not exactly as “chill” as a trip to Colliery Dam.

That said, if you’re up to the moderate challenge, then you will be rewarded with an unparalleled view of Nanaimo and its surrounding waters!

You deserve a getaway – and the Best Western Dorchester Hotel is working hard to give you a safe, clean, RELAXING trip away from the day-to-day! Book your room at the Dorchester Hotel today and enjoy a relaxing trip to one of Vancouver Island’s jewels!

Nanaimo is a port town that’s right next to the splendour of nature, and you’d better believe everyone here is looking forward to the spring! Winters in Nanaimo are quite mild, but there’s something about the open air of a Vancouver Island mountain looking down at the ocean that makes you yearn for sunlight!
If you need to get out of the house and want to explore the natural beauty of Vancouver Island, here are some of our favourite trails!

COLLIERY DAM PARK TRAIL
You don’t have to leave Nanaimo to go for a great walk! The Colliery Dam Park Trail is one of the city’s most beloved walks, and it’s not far from downtown! This dog-friendly trail gives you a nice long walk without demanding too much effort, though even avid hikers will enjoy its rolling hills! Even better, the dam itself is a good old-fashioned swimming hole! Bring your bathing suit this April if you’re brave enough for a brisk dip!

THE ABYSS
Part of the Great Canadian Trail, The Abyss is also known as Extension Ridge and it’s a TON of fun. Featuring some areas where you’ll need to use chains to help climb steeper rock-faces, this moderately challenging trail is just under 10 km as a round trip but one of the more memorable hikes you’ll ever have!

AMMONITE FALLS
A short hike located just off the Nanaimo Parkway, this area is named for the incredible number of prehistoric ammonite fossils that have been found in its soil! Centred on a breathtaking rainforest waterfall, this is another favourite for locals.

Of course, some of Nanaimo’s best trails are secrets, known only by locals. Book a room at the Best Western Dorchester Inn and our friendly staff will be sure to share their favourite trails!

Canada has a thriving arts scene and produces great art that speaks to Canadian across this great land of ours. You can experience some of these classic works in Nanaimo this March, making it the perfect time to plan a trip to Vancouver Island.

FRED PENNER

Fred Penner returns to Nanaimo! One of Canada’s most beloved children’s entertainers, Fred Penner has been leading singalongs for over nearly four decades, both as a touring musician and as the host of classic children’s show, Fred Penner’s Place. Combining incredible guitar playing with a knack for writing songs that speak directly to children without condescending or annoying parents, Fred will forever be known for hits like “The Cat Came Back,” “Sandwiches,” “You Can Do It If You Try” and “Riders in The Sky”! Introduce your kids to this Canadian classic on March 21 at Nanaimo’s Port Theatre!

KIM’S CONVENIENCE

Do you love CBC’s hit sitcom, Kim’s Convenience? Even if you do, you might not know that the TV show was based on an original (and award-winning) play written by series creator Ins Choi, which debuted at the Toronto Fringe Festival before being adapted into an award-winning TV show! The original play is maybe even more warm-hearted and hilarious than the show, if you can believe that, and it will be showing March 25 at the Port Theatre in a production by Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre! Follow the family drama and comedy as Mr. Kim grapples with running a neighbourhood convenience store in a changing city while dealing with his second-generation immigrant family!

In our opinion, Nanaimo itself is a Canadian classic. Perched in a gorgeous setting against the sea and Vancouver Island’s lush greenery, it still has the feel of a frontier town while offering great city experiences. Book a stay at the Best Western Dorchester Inn and experience the best that Nanaimo has to offer!
